Drop Safes, the First Line of Security for Handling Cash

Any type of business that deals with cash is in the high-risk robbery category, and includes businesses and organizations as diverse as churches, gas stations, grocery stores, liquor stores and nightclubs. The first line of security in this high-risk category is the installation of drop safes to secure cash donations or to deposit excess cash from registers. Drop safes or drop boxes as they are sometimes called have been designed with a slot or opening at the top for the easy depositing of cash or other valuable items.
Drop SafesDrop Safe, Drop SafesDrop Safe, Drop Safes

To stop would be thieves from accessing drop safes via the opening and “fishing” out the contents, drop safes will have either a baffle attached to the slot, a hinged hopper similar to bank deposit safes or a rotary hopper mounted on its top. Anchoring the drop safe to a bench or under a counter using the pre-drilled anchoring holes in the drop safes base provides another level of security. Anchoring drop safes prevents thieves from simply picking up the drop safe and walking out with it.
Drop safes come with a number of locking options including single key locks, dual key locks and electronic keypad mechanisms. The locking option chosen will be dependent upon what procedures the business or organization has in place with each type of lock providing owners with a solution suitable to their business.
Drop safes when used in conjunction with a cash management strategy are an excellent security measure for businesses receiving cash payments, checks or cash takings. However, it must be remembered that drop safes are designed as a mid to low security measure and being non-fireproof, should only be used for the temporary security of valuables. The contents of drop safes must be cleared regularly, and then secured in a burglary rated safe, preferably a safe with a fireproof rating, ready for the banking cycle. Never leave cash or valuables in drop safes overnight.
Robbers regularly target bars and nightclubs due to the large amounts of cash held on the premises at night. It is imperative that businesses operating at night such as nightclubs, liquor stores, late night convenience stores etc. have well hidden drop safes, a burglary rated safe and maintain a strict cash management procedures.

Hollon Two Hour Fireproof Home Safes

The Hollon home safes range comes in three sizes and come with either a dial combination lock or electronic keyboard.  While dial combination and electronic keyboard home safes are both easily opened the electronic keyboard offers greater user flexibility at a minimal cost. Home safes with the electronic keypad locking mechanism are easily programmed, accept access codes from 3-8 digits, allowing the combination to be changed whenever needed.

Hollon home safes are extremely well constructed and feature seamless solid steel wrap on the outside and a solid steel lining on the inside. Between the two steel linings, the home safes have a concrete based fireproof layer that has been tested to provide two hours fire protection. The seamless construction of the home safes also eliminates the weaknesses associated with welded seams making the safes far more resistant to the attention of burglars.

Burglaries; Why Our Homes Need Home Safes

The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program estimated burglaries accounted for 23.6% of property crimes and of those, burglaries of residential properties accounted for 72.6% of all burglary offences. Home safes can and do protect your valuables from burglars. The estimated loss to burglaries is $4.6 billion per annum. Homes with home safes installed are potentially secured against the average dollar loss per burglary of $2,096. Another sobering reason for installing home safes is that only 12.5% of burglary offences are cleared nationally.
Home Safes are a Deterrent

Typically, most burglaries occur in daytime, take only a couple of minutes and are opportunistic. For a burglar speed and opportunity are all-important and are deterred when home safes are installed. The items most frequently stolen, cash, firearms, jewellery, electronics and silverware are items easily protected by installing home safes. Burglars that are more sophisticated are targeting identity documents so in these times of identity theft securing personal papers in home safes is becoming a priority.

Home Safes Come in a Range of Sizes
Home safes are more specialized, more affordable and come with a range of technical specifications, sizes and features to suit all homes. Good home safes will offer fire, burglary, water and impact protection. Depending on what you are protecting home safes fall into a number of categories – fireproof home safes, fireproof burglary safes, data safes, gun safes, wall safes and biometric safes.

The HS one-hour UL fireproof home safes range has been built for strength to deter burglars, offers 1-hour fire protection in case of fire and for appearance. The HD20 fire resistant laptop safe, the RPO RG fireproof gunsafes and the HZ53 biometric safe are good examples of specialized home safes.

Guide to UL Classes and Ratings for Fireproof Safes

The leading testing agency for fireproof safes in the United States is Underwriter Laboratories (UL). Under the UL system fireproof safes are given one of three ‘Class’ classifications in combination with five time ratings. The Class classification for fireproof safes is dependent on the internal temperature and internal humidity the fireproof safes can maintain at a pre-determined external furnace temperature. The UL Class classification temperatures for fireproof safes have been determined by the type of product to be protected. Effectively there are three categories of products to be protected by fireproof safes and these give rise to the Class classification.

·         Class 350 - Paper based products including cash that begin to burn at 420 degrees

·         Class 150 - Computer data tapes, magnetic reel-to-reel - tapes

·         Class 125 - Computer diskettes

Class 350 fireproof safes must maintain an internal temperature of 125 degrees F and humidity not exceeding 85%

Class 150 fireproof safes must maintain an internal temperature of 150 degrees F and humidity not exceeding 85%

Class 125 fireproof safes must maintain an internal temperature of 125 degrees F and humidity not exceeding 80%

For each of the above Class classifications the minimum time rating is half an hour. To pass the test, fireproof safes must maintain the internal temperature and humidity required for the Class for half an hour at a furnace temperature of 1700 degree F.

Requirements for other time ratings are one hour at a furnace temperature of 1850 degrees F, two hours at a furnace temperature of 1850 degrees F, three hour at a furnace temperature of 1920 degrees F or four hour at a furnace temperature of 2000 degrees F.

Therefore, Class 350 UL 1 hour rated fireproof safes would maintain an internal temperature of 350 degrees at 85% humidity for one hour in a fire burning at 1850 degrees.

If you were looking for fireproof safes to store data tapes you would be best served purchasing a Class 125 data safe with a UL rating of .5 to 4 hours. For cash and documents you would be looking for Class 350 fireproof safes for home or business.

Drop Safes for Cash Businesses

RD-2014 Top-Loading Rotary Depository Safe
Drop safes are an excellent security measure for businesses receiving cash payments, checks and cash takings. Where there are employees dealing with cash and where larger volumes of cash need to be kept between banking cycles, drop safes have proven valuable in lowering internal theft. Places you will see drop safes used include motels, restaurants, churches and gas stations.
Designed for mid to low security and in the main being non-fireproof, drop safes or drop boxes, should only be used for the temporary security of valuables. The contents of drop safes should always be transferred to more secure storage at night. Fireproof home or office safes and especially fireproof burglary safes should be used. For businesses such as bars and nightclubs operating at night there are burglary rated drop safes available. While drop safes can be relatively simple affairs this does not mean that drop safes have poor security.
When choosing drop safes there are a number of security features to be considered.
SDB 104 Dual Key Drop Safe
·         Drop slot security
·         Locks
·         Anchoring

Because drop safes have an opening for depositing valuables there needs to be a means of stopping thieves from ‘fishing’ out the contents. There are three main types of slot security for drop safes:-
·         A baffle attached to the slot
·         A hinged hopper similar to bank deposit safes
·         A rotary hopper mounted on top of the safe
Depending on what procedures are used to manage how drop safes are used in the business will determine the type of lock used. Drop safes come with
·         single key locks,
·         dual key locks and
·         electronic keypad mechanisms.
Each type provides drop safe owners with a security procedure suitable to their business.

SDB 104 Pre-Drilled Anchor Holes
Another level of security comes with being able to secure drop safes by anchoring the safes using pre-drilled anchoring holes. The drop safe is then protected from anyone picking up the safe and walking off.
